Berries and mushrooms… I miss them from Latvia the most. Picking wild strawberries and bilberries in a forest and arranging them on a grass stem, gooseberries, raspberries, red currants and blackcurrants in grandparent’s garden eaten straight from the bush, and excitement of mushroom hunting and the first mushroom sauce of the year… You see, pīrāgi, rye bread and sauerkraut can be replicated anywhere in the world, but getting your hands on various fresh berries and wild mushrooms can be very challenging, if possible at all.
That brings me to my favourite summer dessert – bilberries and milk; I just cannot get enough of them every time I visit Latvia. It must be the easiest dessert in the world – just add some bilberries (quantity depends on you entirely) to a serving bowl, sprinkle them with couple teaspoons of white sugar, and cover with milk. Bliss in a bowl and a purple tongue afterwards :)
